Top Border Force officials spent £2,300 on ‘truly bonkers’ away day working out what ‘colour’ their personalities were
- Labour MP for North Durham, Kevan Jones blasted the Home Office for trip
- Personality colours included ‘fiery red’, ‘cool blue’ & ‘Earth green’
The summer small boats crisis may have been at its height last August, but it seems top Border Force officials had other priorities – working out just what ‘colour’ their personalities were.
The Border Force transformation team – set up to modernise case-handling processes – spent over £2,300 on an away day which included discovering if they were one of four colour-coded types.
These included ‘fiery red’ if they were demanding but aggressive, or ‘sunshine yellow’ if they were sociable and excitable.
Alternatively, they were ‘cool blue’ for being more cautious if possibly indecisive, or ‘Earth green’ (caring but potentially docile).
Embarrassingly for Border Force chiefs, the so-called ‘Insight Profiles’ training sessions came just two days before migrants had to be evacuated from the Bibby Stockholm barge in Portland Harbour, over fears they would catch Legionnaires’ disease from bacteria lurking on the vessel.
Personality colours included ‘fiery red’ if they were demanding but aggressive, ‘sunshine yellow’ if they were sociable and excitable, ‘cool blue’ for being more cautious if possibly indecisive, and ‘Earth green’ for showing signs of being caring but potentially docile.

And last night, Labour MP for North Durham, Kevan Jones, blasted the Home Office over the ‘truly bonkers’ away day.
Former Minister Mr Jones told The Mail on Sunday: ‘Fiery red is what hard-pressed taxpayers will be when they find out about this.
‘I suppose we should be grateful that there is a transformation unit but this new age-style outing is farcical. Never mind what colour their personalities are – what planet are they on?’
However, sources with knowledge of the colour-coded tests – which were provided by Churchill Square Consulting – said the techniques were based on respected established methods pioneered by famous Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung.
One said: ‘They are a global tool used by most FTSE 500 companies – it gives the most accurate representation of people’s personality preferences. They can improve self-awareness, as well as personal and team effectiveness.’
A Home Office spokesman said last night: ‘The Border Force transformation team deliver highly complex programmes to protect the UK border and keep its citizens secure, and high performance is critical to that.
‘They are not responsible for border patrols nor are they responsible for the operational delivery of the Bibby Stockholm.
‘Self-analysis techniques were a small part of what was delivered at the team away day.’
