Heartbroken mum of newborn baby mauled to death by family dog screamed 'I'll never forgive myself'

THE heartbroken mum of a newborn baby mauled to death by the family's pet dog screamed: "I'll never forgive myself".

Tragic 12-day-old Elon Ellis suffered horrific injuries after being savaged by Chow Chow-cross Teddy on Sunday.

His mum, Abigail Ellis, 27, and dad, Stephen Joynes, 35, were arrested by cops on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence.

They have since been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Grief-stricken mum Ellis has now told pals her world has "fallen apart" after the tragedy in Doncaster, South Yorks.

She told neighbour Linda Siddle: "I can’t get over this."

Linda, 58, said her friend had been struggling with anxiety following the deaths of her dad and her long-term partner Joel Smart, 28.

Joel, father of three of her children, died last year following heart problems and is believed to have contracted sepsis.

Linda said Ellis ran into the street screaming after the attack – and told her: "I'll never forgive myself."

Mum-of-one Linda said: "I was just trying to console her, what can you even do in a situation like that.

"She was hysterical, crying and screaming, I’ve never seen her like that before.

"Her world has just fallen apart and I just hope she can get the support she needs to get through this.

It was a new chapter in her life..And it ended in 12 days in complete tragedy

"But what she’s suffered through, what she’s experienced, no one should ever have to.

"I went into the house and I will spend my life trying to forget what I saw."

Linda, who has lived next door for 40 years and watched Ellis grow up, says she hopes she returns to the house.

She added: "She needs our help and our support because what she’s going through right now is unimaginable.

"I hope she comes back because we all love her here. This is her home, we are her family

"But she won’t come back for a while, how could anyone?"

Linda said the mum was excited to start a new chapter with Joynes who she described as being “fantastic” with the kids.

Linda said: “She was so excited about this baby. I can’t believe this, still.

"It was a new chapter in her life, after everything she’d been through, she was so excited to start something so beautiful with Stephen.

"And it ended in 12 days in complete tragedy.

"You don’t expect a parent to bury their own child, never."

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said the dog was removed from the home on Sunday and will remain in secure kennels until enquiries have been completed.

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said Ellis was unlikely to return after suffering a triple tragedy at the property.

Her dad, Richard, died there in 2013 and childhood sweetheart, Joel Smart, 28, dad to her three older kids, passed away from sepsis last year.

Ellis was rebuilding her life with Joynes and told friends she was "starting a fresh" with her "new ray of hope".

But the neighbour in Doncaster, South Yorks., said: "I don't ever see her coming back.

"She's lived here for nearly 20 years but so much tragedy has unfolded in that house.

"She lost her dad, her partner and now her baby.

"The house is haunted for life."

She said there has been an eerie silence in the street since the tragedy unfolded on Sunday afternoon.

The resident added: "It's just unbelievable what happened. No one really knows how to react."

She also recalled the horrific events on Sunday afternoon when she heard the "soft and fuzzy" dog squealing.

Shortly after there was a commotion, and when the police arrived she heard the "terrified" dog barking loudly.

When she looked out her kitchen window she saw officers trying to capture the dog with a pole with a noose cable at the end of it.

Emergency services flooded the scene and tiny Elon was rushed to hospital, where he tragically died from injuries despite the best efforts of medics.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: "The dog was removed from the address on Sunday and will remain in secure kennels until enquiries have been completed."

Floral tributes remain at the gates of the property and the curtains are drawn.

Ellis had posted a comment on a photo of the adorable baby boy just 11 days before he died, saying: "Our gorgeous baby boy. Love him to bits".

She also added a touching photo on Facebook of her with the tiny baby in her hospital bed and another with his three siblings.

Her fiance Joynes beamed: "2020 not that bad I suppose, little baby Elon! Weighed 6lb 11oz. Couldn't be more chuffed with little Elon xxx."

Last night, friends and family described mum-of-four Ellis as a "brilliant" mum and insisted: "Her kids are her whole world.

"She would never put them in jeopardy. This is just a tragic accident."

Ellis's brother said she was upstairs in the bathroom when Teddy leapt over his pen in the garden and entered the house.

Joynes and Ellis's young son are believed to have witnessed the appalling attack.

Her brother Keith added: "It was horrible and we’re all in total shock.

"My sister’s in bits, she’s lost her baby, and her son saw it all.

"Teddy’s not a bad or dangerous dog. He’d been living at the house for months and was really good around my sister’s other three kids.

"I think he was jealous when the new baby came along and all the attention he was getting.

"Or maybe he thought the baby was a toy, he was a tiny thing and only six pounds something when he was born.

"It’s your worst nightmare.

"The dog was in the pen and he suddenly jumped over the top and got free and went through the open door into a room downstairs where the baby was in a Moses basket.

"Then it attacked him. He may have thought it was a toy or a doll."

One friend, who asked not to be named, told how Ellis was rebuilding her life after the death of her former partner and saw Elon as "a fresh start".

She said: "Abi and Joel had been together since they were 14 and built a family together.

"They planned to get married but Abi's world was turned upside down when he died last year.

"It really hurt her and their three kids are all she has left of him. She's never had it easy and I've known her since she was four.

"But she met Stephen and fell pregnant and saw this as a fresh start – new partner, new baby.

"She felt guilty about getting into a new relationship because she and Joel had been childhood sweethearts.

"But baby Elon was her ray of hope amid the tragedy."
