The next season of Netflix’s successful small town drama is finally heading to screens in July. However, Virgin River is still at the mercy of the cannabis dealer and local crime boss, Calvin (played by David Cubitt), and a new theory may have revealed someone else in town has been working for him.
Fans still aren’t sure who to trust heading into the next highly anticipated instalment of the Netflix romance.
No one seems to be free from the clutches of Calvin, a drug dealer and crime lord who is slowly taking over the small town of Virgin River.
A convincing theory has even tipped the tow truck driver and local sweetheart Bert Logan (Trevor Lerner) as one of his potential lackeys.
Speculation for the next season began when Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) discovered Jack (Martin Henderson) had been shot.
Most fans seem to agree that Calvin orchestrated the shocking attack on Jack, as the pair have clashed several times over the series.
Some clues in the first season episode, ‘Into the Light’, could bring Bert into the conspiracy, even suggesting he was the one who pulled the trigger.
During this episode, Mel wakes up from a horrific dream involving her dead husband, Mark (Daniel Gillies).
Meanwhile, the town population huddles for shelter in Jack’s bar when Virgin River is hit by a raging storm.
Suspicions were raised when Mel first meets Bert, a pleasant local who drives the town’s tow truck.
She realises that he recently broke his hand in a towing accident, and Mel has to convince him to let her set it for him as he doesn’t have his own health insurance.
However, their conversation takes a strange turn when Jack shows up to drive them to the clinic.
Earlier in the series, Jack and Mel break down and are found by Calvin’s right hand man, Jimmy (Ian Tracey).

When he realises Mel is the town’s new Nurse Practitioner, Jimmy kidnaps them and brings them to the drug lord, who is dealing with a gunshot wound.
Jumping back to episode eight, Bert starts apologising profusely, as he was the driver who should have been on the scene when the pair broke down.
Mel eventually takes a lesson from Bert’s apology, as she starts to come to terms with the fact that the death of her husband wasn’t her fault.
However, she may have been right to initially distrust Bert’s guilt over something that wasn’t his fault.
The truck driver’s conscience could be starting to catch up to him in this moment, as Calvin may have managed to blackmail him into setting up Mel and Jack.
Furthermore, Bert could even be one of Calvin’s many lackeys across town, and was paid off to deliberately leave Jack in the lurch for Jimmy to find.
Season three definitely has many more surprises in store, so fans will have to wait to find out if this brief moment from the first season comes into play.
Virgin River season 3 will be released on Friday, July 9 on Netflix.
