Outlander is well-known for its time-travelling twists, having had a number of shocks for fans over the series so far. However, an obituary in season four for Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) left viewers very worried for the beloved characters. Here’s how the characters could avoid the grisly fate planned for them.
Will Claire and Jamie fake their own deaths in fire twist?
In season four of Outlander, Fiona Graham (Iona Claire) found an obituary from the 18th century when looking through old documents.
When Roger Mackenzie (Richard Rankin) went to visit her and spoke about his relationship with Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton), she then presented him with the document.
Not knowing the importance of the information it held, the short obituary revealed Jamie and Claire died in the 1770s in North Carolina.
Fans will remember this read: “It is with grief that the news is received of the death by fire of James Mackenzie Fraser and his wife in a conflagration that destroyed the home and the settlement of Fraser’s Ridge.
- Outlander season 5: How has Roger and Jamie’s relationship changed?
The date on this read January 21, 177?, which left Roger to conclude how it could have happened at any point in the 1770s.
Now season five is airing and is set between 1770 and 1772, fans are very worried this death could be imminent for the Frasers.
Of course, viewers will know how after learning of this, Brianna then made the decision to travel to the past to warn Claire and Jamie.
However, after the initial shock, the subject of the fire has not come up much again.
But some fans are wondering how they might be able to side-step this already recorded part of history in the series.
One theory suggests Jamie and Claire might fake their own deaths in order to achieve this.
Reddit fan alt-ging wrote: “Brianna decided to go through the stones after she finds out about Jamie and Claire’s obituary because she wants to warn them and hopefully prevent their death.
“This eventually leads Roger through the stones after her, and to the birth of her/their child Jeremiah.

“I have this working theory that the obituary is fake and/or they will end up creating a fire to fake their deaths to use as a cover up for when they eventually do decide to return through the stones once they know if Jeremiah can hear them.”
This theory proposes how Jamie and Claire will be able to stay alive in the future with no consequences from the past.
Although as fans of the show will know, Jamie cannot travel through the stones so this would mean another parting for the lovers.
Other viewers speculated how this could play out in the series as well.
User lesoiseaux replied: “I was thinking their remains might be cadavers and their death will be a way for them to avoid fighting the British.”

A third named Mou_aresei added: “I have a similar theory that they end up faking their deaths.
“But I’m thinking the reason for it won’t be to go through the stones but it might be to do with escaping the law.
“Maybe it’ll be related to the upcoming revolution somehow.”
There seems to be plenty of possibilities for how this will be resolved in the show.
Viewers will have to keep tuning in to find exactly how the series does it.
Outlander season 5 airs on Starz on Sundays and Amazon’s Prime Video on Mondays.
