Emmerdale’s Liam Cavanagh star shuts down Bernice affair rumours ahead of return

Emmerdale's Jonny McPherson has knocked any prospects of a romantic reunion between Bernice Blackstock and Liam Cavanagh, insisting the doctor's new fiancée is "the one".

It was recently revealed Bernice, played by Samantha Giles, will return to the village, storming back to Emmerdale two years after she left for Australia.

Her return coincides with Liam's wedding to Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi), rocking the boat ahead of their big day.

When asked whether Bernice was Liam's true love, Jonny, who has been a fixture on the soap since 2014, said: "Leyla's absolutely the one."

Jonny then reflected on Liam's disastrous dating history, which saw him divorce paedophile Maya Stepney (Louisa Clein), before getting dumped the day before his wedding to Bernice.

Explaining why Liam and Leyla are such a strong couple, he said: "The fact that they've had to work through all that stuff.

"He didn't know that Maya was a paedophile. He didn't know that Bernice was going to b*gger off back to Australia to sort out her first husband.

"It feels like he has been leaping in too quickly, too hard. But now he's met somebody where everything's out in the open. Total trust, he's dead excited."

Jonny finished: "If Bernice was to come back, I think he'd be furious and just sick to his stomach."

Bernice and Liam first shared a kiss in the wake of his separation from Maya, who he discovered had been having an affair with David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) – and subsequently groomed his teenage son.

Their relationship was illicit to begin with, as Liam stole Bernice away from her long-term boyfriend Daz Spencer (Mark Jordon), urging her to end things with him.

They got engaged in July 2019, but when Bernice learned her ex-husband Charlie had fallen ill in Australia, she packed her bags and left, leaving Liam distraught.

Upcoming scenes will see Liam, who has fallen hard for Leyla, get on bended knee with a personalised diamond ring, asking for her hand in marriage.

However, nothing is ever simple in Emmerdale, and Bernice's return threatens to cast a cloud over their blossoming romance.

Actress Samantha said: "I'm delighted to be returning to play out Bernice's future storylines which I'm sure are going to keep the audience entertained.

"She certainly arrives back with a bang that's all I'm allowed to say right now and I'm looking forward to releasing my next two books whilst juggling her hectic onscreen life!"

Bernice isn't the only ex who could spoil things for Liam – actor Jonny addressed how his character would feel if his ex-wife Maya showed her face again.

"For him, he obviously unwittingly married a paedophile," he said.

"It's just another mark of how blind he's been to throwing himself into love. Also, he's ended up inflicting that person on the village and wreaking havoc in so many people's lives."

"So I think he'd feel horrendous guilt," he finished.

Actress Roxy Shahidi, whose character Leyla has been central to the village since 2008, also hinted she'd go to great lengths to banish Maya from the village upon her return.

"I think it would make her blood run cold and I think she'd absolutely do everything in her power to try and get rid of her," she said.

"I don't think she'd necessarily try and kill her again but I think she'd stop at nothing to get rid of her, to be quite honest."

Emmerdale airs on weekdays at 7pm on ITV, with an extra helping on Thursdays at 8pm.
