Dan Walker helped by Helen Skelton to overcome fear he has avoided for life

Helen Skelton helped Dan overcome his fear of heights

Dan Walker detailed how pal Helen Skelton helped him tackle his life-long fear of heights.

Appearing on ITV’s Lorraine on Tuesday, the broadcaster explained he had “avoided heights for life”.

Stand-in host Ranvir Singh stated: “Given how tall you are, you’ve got a fear of heights.”

“I don’t like heights, I don’t like horses,” Dan confessed as a clip of the programme showed him and Helen horseriding.

Laughing, Ranvir replied: “Right, so guess what the producers did!”

“Exactly!” Dan responded, “Later on in the series…”

“Tightrope walking on a horse!” Ranvir quipped as Dan explained: “Helen also encouraged me to embrace the height.

“So there’s a ludicrously long abseil we do in episode three, but tonight on the programme we do this tyrolean traverse, which is essentially where you put a wire between two very high points and then you pull yourself across.

“And it’s just that thing… I don’t put myself in that situation because I genuinely don’t like it.”

He asked the presenter: “Are you alright with heights?”

“Yeah, I’m alright with it sort of,” Ranvir answered.

Dan admitted: “OK, I’ve avoided them my entire life… I embraced it for this programme.”

“And it’s only your friendship that could encourage you to do it, isn’t it?” Ranvir pointed out.

“Exactly, well you know what she’s [Helen] like, she’s cruised the Amazon and does everything, so she’s a good encourager,” Dan remarked.

The series sees the two Strictly Come Dancing stars exploring Ickley Moors, Hebden Bridge, Saltaire and the town of Keighley.

The Channel 5 show started last week and was well-received by viewers.

The opening episode saw the two visiting the village of Edale where they sheared sheep, cycled and travelled to the valley where The Dam Busters trained for the Second World War raid.

They went on to see the Ladybower Reservoir and did canoeing along Britain’s longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel, Standedge.

Dan & Helen’s Pennine Adventure continues on Tuesday at 9pm on Channel 5.
