Coronation Street: The Barlow’s interrogate Peter
Coronation Street’s Peter Barlow (played by Chris Gascoyne) could be set to form an unlikely alliance with Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) after the pair bonded over their grief tonight.
During scenes which aired tonight, Peter was accompanied by Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) to the police station.
DS Swain (Vicky Myers) was still tying up loose ends over Stephen Reid’s (Todd Boyce) death and was adamant about nailing Peter for murder.
However, things took a turn when she informed Peter that they would be closing the investigation as they were satisfied he knocked Stephen down over fears for Jenny’s life.
DS Swain said: “As we explained at the flat, new information has come to light about Stephen Reid’s death. We have reason to believe that he wasn’t going to hurt Ms Connor.

“At the time of the incident, you had no idea what had happened between the deceased and Ms Connor?”
Peter explained: “No how could I have? I was in the car and I came around the corner and it just happened in a split second, I wish I had known now.”
DS Swain later revealed: “Having considered the CCTV, forensics, witness statements and so forth, we have decided not to proceed.
“We wanted to confirm that you couldn’t have possibly have known that Mr Reid wasn’t going to harm Ms Connor.

“As far as we are concerned you were purely motivated by the desire to protect her from possible lethal harm.”
Whilst Peter was relieved to not be going to prison, he still couldn’t get his head around the fact he killed Stephen when he wasn’t going to harm Jenny Connor (Sally-Ann Matthews).
Sitting in the precinct but himself a little later, Toyah caught him lighting a cigarette and sat down next to him, forcing him to put it away.
Discussing how he felt, Peter opened up: “I did do something wrong, I killed someone. I did, I am responsible for his death and it is that simple and it is not easy to live with.”
Toyah responded: “Welcome to the club, it might not be exactly the same but you know I was driving and he died,” referring to her late husband Imran Habeeb (Charlie De Melo).
“My head was messed up for a long time. I kept torturing myself, thinking back to what I was thinking, and feeling, why did I do what I did?
“Sometimes our minds just go into overdrive. But in your split second, you saw Jenny and Stephen and everything looked like he was going to hurt her.
“Forget what you know now, you have no choice, Peter. I know it is easy to say it but you have to find a way to live with what you did.”
Peter thanked Toyah for her comfort and admitted he was going to an AA meeting for his alcoholism, where she offered to give him a lift.
Could Toyah become a shoulder to cry on for Peter? Will Carla begin to worry about their newfound friendship?
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
