Over the past few weeks, Coronation Street fans have watched as killer Stephen Reid ((Todd Boyce) grows increasingly closer to Elaine Jones (Paula Wilcox). However, her son Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) is starting to worry for his mother as her last relationship was with his abusive and manipulative dad Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew).

It’s no secret that Tim has struggled to come to terms with his father being an evil man as fans saw him loyally stick by his side before finally seeing his true colours.

Failing to see the kind of monster his father really was, it’s safe to say Tim could have a little trouble trusting the male figures in his life.

In scenes set to air next week, viewers will see Tim’s wariness come into play when he watches his mum Elaine and Stephen enter the cafe together.

Noticing her son’s protectiveness, she reassures him that Stephen is nothing like his father and stands in his corner as she claims Stephen is as honest as the day long.

However, little do they know that Stephen is hiding the fact that he accidentally killed Leo Thompkins (Joe Frost) while trying to stop his lies from being exposed.

Later on, viewers watch as Tim questions Stephen on what his intentions are with his mother as he explains the awful time she encountered while being with Geoff.

Sharing that his father used to control Elaine, the conman banks this information and decides to use it to his advantage in the future.

Elsewhere, in the cobbles, Sarah is left gutted when a meeting with a potential investor goes wrong as Gail and Audrey put pressure on Stephen to invest the £10k his niece needs, unaware he’s broke.

Remembering the information Tim shared on Geoff manipulating Elaine, Stephen plays a cruel trick on her to get her feeling sorry for him.

He sends an abusive text message to himself but makes it look as though it has come from his ex-wife Gabrielle (Helene Maksoud) who he’s in a considerable amount of debt to.

Seeing the message, Elaine suggests that Gabrielle is gaslighting him as he makes out he deserves the treatment.

Confiding in him that she too was in an abusive relationship, Elaine decides she wants to help him.

Wanting to help Stephen, Adam Barlow offers to sue Six Fellas for the injuries that he sustained while delivering food and being mugged, a despairing Stephen is forced to go along with it.

Meanwhile, Sarah reveals that she and Michael have everything in place and as soon as they receive his £10k, the business will be up and running.

Although with Stephen not having much to his name, how will his spiral of lies continue to unfold as he has to cough up a staggering amount of cash he doesn’t have?

A theory by suggests that Stephen sets his sights on Elaine to be his next victim to rinse her for her money.

Using her abusive past as leverage, the conman could play on her heartstrings as he makes up more lies about how he needs money to get away from his past, unaware that the money would be going straight into her pocket.

When actor Todd Boyce was asked if he believes Stephen could kill again by Radio Times he said: “I do think he [could].

“He’s just driven. He’s a kind of type-A personality and he’s just desperate and desperate people do desperate things.

“Now he has done it once it won’t even feel as bad for him the next time – the end justifies the means.”

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
