Coronation Street producer promises huge storylines when filming returns

Coronation Street continues to fire on all cylinders at the moment as hard hitting storylines including Geoff Metcalfe’s (Ian Bartholomew) abuse of Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King) and Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey) falling victim to sexting revenge porn currently airing.

There are also big storylines to come over the next few months despite the soap’s shutdown amid the coronavirus crisis including terrible health fears for young Oliver and a secret threatening Johnny Connor (Richard Hawley) as a face from his past arrives.

With filming having halted and there being no indication of when lockdown measures will ease enough to allow cast and crew to safely return to work, fans have been wondering how soaps will work around the gap that may be up to several months where stories fall behind.

Particularly with Corrie’s 60th anniversary in December having already been planned, how many changes will have to be made?

Thankfully, story producer Lindsay Williams has assured fans that work is still ongoing behind the scenes to ensure there are explosive and dramatic storylines ready to film the moment it is possible.

In a post for Coronation Street Blog, she wrote: ‘We are currently looking at the best way to start filming again whenever lockdown is lifted and luckily been able to keep so many of the brilliant stories we were planning to play over this year, so we’re really excited about what’s to come.

She added: ‘On the last Friday before we halted production we actually shot 7 scenes in just a few hours with some amazing work by the cast who had learned the scenes a few hours earlier.

‘It really went to the wire but we managed to get everything we could possibly shoot finished and edited in record time. I think everyone left the building feeling really proud and privileged to be part of Team Corrie.’

It was recently confirmed that Coronation Street and Emmerdale had furloughed hundreds of staff – and would be topping up the remaining 20% of their salaries while they can’t work.
