Armistice Day: Woman smokes in crowd during silence
BBC viewers have hit out at an onlooker for smoking during the Remembrance Day two minutes silence.
Those at home watching The Lord Mayor’s Show on BBC One took to social media to brand the female in the crowd “so disrespectful”.
As the broadcast fell quiet at 11am, the camera cut to one person puffing away on a cigarette while watching from the sidelines in London.
X, formerly known as Twitter, was inundated with angry comments discussing what they had witnessed.
@ruth_clark posted: “#lordmayshow just what you don’t want to see a woman smoking during the armistice silence, how disrespectful #armisticeday #Armistice.”

@StuDavies quickly agreed: “Can’t even put down a cigarette to pay respects?” as @GrahamG14843952 tweeted: “During the 2 minutes silence. I despair. #RemembranceDay #lordmayorsshow #bbc1.”
A fourth using the handle @AliDotSinclair wrote: “It’s two mins of your life… put the fag out #lordmayorsshow #ArmisticeDay #bbc1.”
Someone else questioned why the channel had chosen that person to hone in on when there was a large gathering in the capital to watch the parade.

Another tweet by @Poppyblew added: “Having a smoke during the Two Minute silence and the cameras catch you. #lordmayorsshow.”
Remembrance Day (November 11) has been observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to honour those who died in the line of duty.
The annual Lord Mayor’s Show, dating back to the 13th century, sees a public parade and marks the appointment of a new lord mayor.
Economist and former accountant Michael Mainelli is the latest figurehead of the City of London Corporation.
Many said they were enjoying the broadcast, which saw a television schedule shake-up to make way for the one-hour 20-minute instalment.
