Barry from EastEnders' weight loss secret is swapping beer for gin

EastEnders star Shaun Williamson has revealed his weight loss secret.

The actor — who is undoubtedly best known for playing Barry Evans in the long-running serial drama — told The Mirror: ‘I lost 10lb – by drinking gin instead of beer.’

‘But I also power walk. Three miles to Tesco’s then three miles back holding the shopping. It took 10lb off over six weeks’

‘You have a type. If I go down too much I’m among the 12st actors.’

‘Why try to be better looking and thinner like guys my age who have looked after themselves and are known as romantic leading men?’

Shaun is known to viewers for his portrayal of Barry in EastEnders — a role he held between 1994 and 2004.

The character’s exit remains one of the soap’s most iconic to date, as — following an altercation with Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) in which she revealed their marriage had been a complete and utter sham — Janine pushed him away, and he ended up falling from a cliff.

After she headed down to check on him, it became apparent that he’d hit his head off a rock, and therefore she left to die — and subsequently inherited everything.

EastEnders continues Monday 30 March at 7:30pm on BBC One.
