Prince Harry has grown up on the global stage. From his first day of life, he was placed in front of the camera and photographed for everyone to see. However, the Duke of Sussex has spoken about discovering what it really meant to be a part of the British royal family following the death of his mother, Princess Diana.
Sadly, the then-12-year-old prince wasn’t even able to privately grieve the tragic loss of his beloved mom without cameras trailing him at her funeral. From there and into his early 20s, Prince Harry began acting out with all of his missteps and indiscretions making front-page news in the U.K.
Now, following his exit from the royal family with his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, it appears that the prince has been fighting for his privacy and battling the tabloids for years. In fact, when he was just a teen, his personal cell phone was hacked.

Prince Harry was unhappy in the spotlight for a long time
Though many people have tried to blame Meghan for Megxit, we now know that it was Prince Harry’s decision. “The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly,” he said in January 2020. “It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges. And I know I haven’t always got it right, but as far as this goes, there really was no other option.”
Despite his apparent jovial nature, the prince had been miserable for a very long time. “The truth is Harry had been unhappy for a long, long time,” the source told The Sun. “He wanted to move in the direction that they did and had been considering it for more than a year. Meghan supported Harry’s decision. But there was more than one occasion where she asked him if he was certain it was what he wanted. And she always made it clear she would support him in whatever he did.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are committed to battling the tabloids
Though she tried to put her best foot forward when she joined the royal family, the British public and press never gave Meghan a real chance. Instead, she had to battle racist and sexist rumors and rhetoric at every chance. By October 2019, she and Prince Harry decided to clap back by suing several tabloids.
“My wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences — a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son,” Prince Harry said in a statement. “Though we have continued to put on a brave face — as so many of you can relate to — I cannot begin to describe how painful it has been.”

Prince Harry’s cell phone was hacked when he was a teenager
Prince Harry has had to battle people infiltrating his privacy since he was a teenager. A whistleblower just revealed that the prince’s phone was tapped when he was studying for the General Certificate of Secondary Education for News Of The World tabloid newspaper.
“As the lead investigator, I was tasked to forensically gather as much intelligence about Prince Harry’s activities in the nocturnal hours, with a view to enhancing the newspaper’s ‘project’,” the source told Byline Investigates. “The instruction was to monitor communications and to identify any references to drugs.”
Now at least, the prince has a strong force by his side when it comes to taking on tabloids. “For most, all of my life, I’ve always been part of a family and part of a country that is scared of the tabloid media because they have so much power and influence and no morals (laughs),” he explained in a leaked phone call. “From the moment that I found a wife that was strong enough to be able to stand up for what we believe in together, has basically scared them so much that they’ve now come out incredibly angry, they’ve come out fighting, and all they will try and do now is try and destroy our reputation and try and, you know, sink us. But what they don’t understand is the battle we are fighting against them is far more than just us.”
