People are only now realising why pineapple makes their mouth tingle

Nothing says summer like biting into a juicy pineapple.

The tropical fruit offers the perfect mix of sweet and sour, and it's fair to say it can set your taste buds on fire.

But have you ever wondered why it makes your mouth tingle?

TikTok user @sf_microscopy revealed a food secret that's left a lot of pineapple lovers shocked.

"Why do our mouths tingle while eating pineapple?" he asked.

He then goes onto explain exactly what happens to stimulate the fruity sensation.

The footage focuses on a slice of fruit, and then he takes a pair of tweezers to pick up a small piece.

It's then placed underneath a microscope, and the reason we experience the taste bud sensation is revealed.

Apparently, it's all down to raphides.

He explained: "It's cause we're getting stabbed by thousands of tiny needles called raphides."

These microscopic needles are "crystals of calcium oxalate," and you can also find them in leafy greens.

When you eat something like pineapple, the raphides jab at the cell membranes in the mouth, and this results in irritation.

SF Microscopy said: "These needles serve as a defensive function against insect herbivores to deter them from eating the plant's fruits and protect the seeds."

But it isn't the only food that contains them as you'll also find the crystals in kiwi, taro, grapes and yams.

Nonetheless, SF Microscopy confessed it wouldn't stop him from munching on the delicious fruit.

But some people admitted the confession left them a little turned off.

One replied: "So basically, while I'm eating my pineapple, the pineapple is eating me."

Another added: "Never eating pineapple again, bro."

"It always feels so raw afterward. This makes so much sense," a third wrote.
