A model sparked fury for saying that coronavirus “makes us more humane”.
Doutzen Kroes made the remark in a now-deleted video broadcast to her 6.4 million followers.
The 35-year-old, who was a Victoria’s Secret Angel from 2008 until 2014, reportedly titled the clip “thank you coronavirus (COVID-19)”.
She argued that there are silver linings to the pandemic, including “giving the planet a break” and bringing people together.
While it wasn’t her intention to offend, the comments sparked backlash.
Chiara Ferragni, an Italian model and fashion influencer, hit back at the footage.
The fashionista responded: “Honestly, this post is so f***ing disrespectful.
“There are hundreds of thousands of people affected by this virus, thousands are dying, doctors have not been able to see their families for weeks, people are losing their jobs, and countries are collapsing.
“And you say that we should be grateful for this virus?
“It is common sense and maturity that should make you appreciate the little things in life, not a deadly virus. What the hell are you talking about?”
Chiara has also been sharing a Go Fund Me to raise money for the fight against coronavirus.
The page has raised €4.4 million so far, which is equivalent to around £4 million.
The criticism of Doutzen caused her to delete the post.
As well as this, the model has since apologised for making the comment.
She said: “I deleted my previous post.
“I got angry reactions from people who said I hurt them."
She added: “That was never my intention…
“I know people die and people are afraid. Doctors work 24 hours a day.
“I’m really sorry if I hurt people.”
Doutzen isn't the only influencer to spark controversy in recent weeks.
Previously, an Instagram star was criticised for making a bikini out of medical masks.
And another social media user angered fans by posing on empty supermarket shelves.
