John Mayer and PRS Guitars Unveil Limited-Edition Silver Sky Guitar

After shaking up the guitar world with its release back in 2018, PRS Guitars‘ Silver Sky guitar has now been reimagined with a limited-edition “Lunar Ice” finish. The limited-edition release is the result of a year’s long, close collaboration between John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith, founder and Managing General Partner of PRS Guitars.

The Silver Sky Limited was introduced during PRS Guitars’ recent 2021 Launch Party livestream with Mayer and Smith.

Limited to just 1,000 units, the special Silver Sky accents the idealized version of a vintage single-coil guitar with a unique polychromatic tone. The “Lunar Ice” finish serves to accentuate the classic elements of 1963 and 1964 instruments informed by modern references found on the body of the guitar. Expressing shades of silver, pink, blue, purple, and green, the “flip-flop” finish reflects hue and light differently at different angles for a unique dynamic element.

Paired with the striking body is a premium maple fretboard that introduces headstock shape, tuning machines, and tremolo bridge. PRS’s trademark headstock shape design has been inverted to both accommodate Mayer’s playing style and maintain a consistent length of string behind the nut for tuning stability. The tuners are traditional vintage-style, closed-back tuners with PRS’ locking design.

Building on the patented PRS bridge design, the steel tremolo incorporates “Gen III” knife-edge screws. Sitting flush to the body while in the neutral position, the tremolo bridge only goes down in pitch and the guitar can be acoustically louder. The improved signal to noise ratio of the 635JM single-coil pickups provides a musical high end that is never “ice-picky” or brash. Finishing up the high-end design of the guitar is a bone nut, molded metal jack plate, retooled knobs, PRS’ double-action truss rod and a PRS premium gig bag.

“After a lot of experimentation, we came up with a paint color that have to see to really get the full effect: as you adjust your view, all these different colors start to jump out,” said John Mayer. “Add to that to this constant push for precision and playability that Paul and I share, and I think this is the best sounding, feeling, and looking Silver Sky yet.”

The John Mayer Silver Sky Limited Guitar, Lunar ice is available now on PRS Guitars’ website.
