DOES your job have flex appeal? The new Employment Relations (Flexible Working) Bill became law over the Summer, granting millions of British workers more control over their work arrangements. 

Employees can now request flexible working from day one of a new job, with employers obligated to consider requests and provide reasons for rejections. 

The latest data from the ONS shows a surge in demand for hybrid jobs, with 38 per cent of staff working from home for at least some of each week.

Firms are responding to this demand by advertising posts as hybrid and fully flexible.

Done well, flexible working can give staff a better work-life balance and help companies raise productivity.

Here’s how to make wfh work for you and your firm, with this week’s Sun Job tips.  

1. Establish the boundaries

What does ‘hybrid’ mean to you and your employer?

Set the number of days you’re expected to be in the office from the start of the role and also any rules on being contacted out of hours.

Get the agreement in writing so both sides are clear.

2. Use the extra time wisely

If you’re saving time on your usual commute, be smart with those hours.

Clear your inbox early, tackle the most pressing tasks of the day and get ahead on your working week.

It’s not about having an extra hour’s lie-in.

3. Dress professionally

It may be tempting to don comfy joggers or stay in your PJs, but you never know when you’ll be called to an online meeting.

Dress the part and be ready just as you would be at work.

4. Balance your commitments

If you’re away from your desk due to other commitments such as the School run, don’t try to hide it.

Be clear on what you are doing and when you’ll be back and logged in.

Most firms are progressive enough to realise staff have a life outside or work.

As long as the work gets done on time, that’s all that really matters.

5. Communicate effectively and stay focused

Set up a dedicated workspace and set working hours as you would in the office.

Keep your communications with your boss and co-workers to the same level or even higher on your wfh days, so everyone feels connected.
