As a nation, there’s little we love more than our pets.
So perhaps it’s unsurprising that some of us prefer to ensure our furry friends stand out from the crowd by giving them unusual and strange names.
In a world filled with ‘Daisys,’ ‘Milos’ and ‘Charlies’, some owners have been going the extra mile in giving their precious pets unique names.
Thanks to registration data, the UK-based team at Everypaw Pet Insurance has released a list of the top ten strangest pet titles to inspire people who are thinking about what to name their new furry companions.
It comes after online searches for ‘best pet names’ increased by 194 per cent over the last three months, while ‘good unique dog names’ saw a 200 per cent rise year over year.
Everypaw Pet Insurance has determined that the top three strangest pet names used in 2023 in the UK are ‘Ham and Cheese Toastie,’ ‘Albus Dumblepaws’ and ‘Baguette’ (stock photo)
Analysing the registration data of dogs, cats and rabbits, Everypaw determined that the top three strangest pet names in the UK are ‘Ham and Cheese Toastie,’ ‘Albus Dumblepaws’ and ‘Baguette.’
Popular food items and well known fictional characters seem to be the source of inspiration behind the majority of the bizarre pet names.
Everypaw’s top 10 strangest pet names
1. Ham and Cheese Toastie
2. Albus Dumblepaws
4. Banana Doughnut
7. Lieutenant Banana Legs
8. Obi Bun Kenobi
9. Captain Toebeans
10. Waffle House Hash Browns
In first place is one of the six food-related pet names making the list – ‘Ham and Cheese Toastie’ – with only one pet being registered with this name.
The name could spark inspiration for plenty of other toastie pet names too, simply choose your favourite fillings and say hello to ‘Marmite Toastie!’
If you have two pets, you could even split the name and call one ‘Ham’ and the other ‘Cheese.’
Everyone loves a pun, and so it’s no surprise that ‘Albus Dumblepaws’ is in second place on Everypaws’ list.
A play on the popular fictional character Albus Dumbledore from Harry Potter, ‘Albus Dumblepaws’ is a hilarious, well-thought out name from an owner who is clearly a fan of the wizarding world.
Coming in third is another food-related name – ‘Baguette’ – one of the strangest yet versatile pet names as, like toastie-related names, you could add fillings and layers of even more individuality to it.
Will your next pet be called ‘Tuna Baguette?’ Perhaps your litter of new rabbits could make up a BLT and be ‘Bacon Baguette,’ ‘Lettuce Baguette’ and ‘Tomato Baguette.’
More food-related names on the list include: ‘Banana Doughnut,’ ‘Obi Bun Kenobi’ and ‘Captain Toebeans.’

‘Whether people want to take inspiration from their favourite food, a fictional character they love, or something completely out of the box, we hope our list of the most unique popular pet names helps people around the UK with naming their pets!’
With more people than ever looking for inspiration for naming their pets, Everypaw is encouraging people in the UK to consider unique and outside-the-box names.
