Selena Gomez on Singing Live; 'I Don't Care How My Voice Is Gonna Sound'

Though Selena Gomez wears many hats, she is best known for being a singer. While many people recall that she got her start in acting, her singing career began at pretty much the same time. Gomez’s first professional gig was on Barney & Friends and she did a lot of singing and dancing on the popular kids show in addition to acting. Years later, she got swept up into the Disney machine, guest-starring in shows like Hannah Montana and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody before booking the lead role of Alex Russo on Wizards of Waverly Place.Though Gomez was mostly acting, she also had quite a few musical moments during the show also and even sang the theme song.

Like many other Disney Channel stars, it didn’t too long before Gomez started putting out her own music. Eventually, she became the lead singer of the band, Selena Gomez & the Scene, with whom she released Kiss & Tell, A Year Without Rain, and When the Sun Goes Down. After splitting from the band, Gomez embarked on a solo career and released Stars Dance, Revival, Rare, and most recently her Spanish language Extended Play, RevelaciĆ³n. In addition to putting out her own music, Gomez has also done a number of collaborations with other artists throughout the course of her career. Her music is known for being emotional as well as catchy and has earned her millions of fans.

Because of Gomez’s extensive discography and popularity, she is often invited to give live performances during awards shows, interviews, and more. However, people have been critical about how the Selena + Chef star sounds when she is singing live. Many people are quick to pounce if Gomez’s voice doesn’t sound as great in person as it does on her albums. Contrastingly, if she does nail a live performance, there tends to be speculation about whether or not she was, in fact, singing live.

Selenators likely remember that Gomez was accused of lip-syncing after she performed at the 2015 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. After Gomez gave a great performance of “Hands to Myself” and “Me & My Girls,” people on social media were convinced that the Only Murders in the Building star had pre-recorded her vocals. But Gomez was having none of it and commented “Yes I fu*king sing live” in response to the myriad of comments on her Instagram page questioning whether or not her performance was live.

In a recent interview interview with Vogue, she got candid about the pressures of singing live and revealed that she copes by worrying more about the story she is portraying and less about how her voice will sound. “Okay,” Gomez began. “Let me just be honest ’cause television and live music is hard. Will I do it? Absolutely, because that’s the opportunity to share what I love. So I just go into it saying, ‘All right. I’m gonna convey my message. And I don’t care how my voice is gonna sound. I’m just gonna do the best I can.’” Clearly, Gomez has found a way to deal with some of the pressures of singing live. We’re sure her fans can’t wait to see her next live performance.
