Princess Eugenie Seen Out For The First Time In Public Since Giving Birth

Ever since giving birth to her first child, Princess Eugenie, the daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, has remained out of the public eye. Considering that taking care of an infant — especially if you’re a new parent — is understood to be a pretty all-encompassing, time-consuming task, it’s hardly surprising that she and her husband, businessman Jack Brooksbank, haven’t spent their days and nights on the town.

Compounded with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the recent resurgence in cases, many of which have been identified as a different COVID-19 variant, it’s no surprise Eugenie hasn’t been seen out and about. But as Page Six reported on April 17, 2021, the royal and her husband were spotted, along with other members of the British royal family, outside and in broad daylight. So what was the occasion that caused Eugenie to be seen outside for the first time in months? Read on after the jump to find out.

Princess Eugenie's first foray into public post-birth was a somber one

Unfortunately, the auspicious occasion that marked the first time Princess Eugenie returned to the public eye was that of solemnity and grief, rather than celebration. Her April 17, 2021 outing was for the purpose of paying respects to her grandfather, Prince Philip, who died on April 9 at the age of 99. As Page Six reported on the day of Philip’s televised funeral procession, Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, were two of 30 royals who were permitted to attend the small gathering, the strict headcount enacted as a protective measure due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Her cousins Prince William and Prince Harry were also in attendance.

Eugenie gave birth to her son, who the royal and her husband named August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, on Feb. 9, exactly two months before the death of her grandfather. Notably, the infant shares his middle name with the first name of his great-grandfather, as Page Six also noted during their coverage of Eugenie’s baby name reveal in February 2021, which she did via her Instagram account. Along with sharing the news, the royal expressed her gratitude “to the wonderful essential workers including our midwife who came to discharge our boy,” revealing that the birthing process had been overseen by both a midwife and other medical professionals.
