Kate Garraway will create some new Christmas traditions with her two children this year. The Good Morning Britain presenter, who shares Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11, with her husband Derek Draper, said that Christmas will be “tough” this year, as he remains in hospital.
The 53-year-old TV star said the family normally have “very specific traditions”, which won’t be possible under the circumstances.
They would visit her husband’s family on Christmas Eve and be with them on Christmas Day, before seeing her own family, however this year, she wants to remain close to Derek and the hospital.
Kate suggested the idea of a “Christmas season” to her kids in order to accept that the big day will be different this year.
The mum-of-two made her comments during a chat with Hello! magazine after she was presented with the Inspiration of the Year Award.
“I’ve been trying to talk to the children about sort of forming new traditions.
“I think we are going to try to have a ‘Christmas Season’ and accept that the day is going to be different, and so we will try and do lots of little things and sort of have a ‘Christmas Season’.
“We’ve already watched Nativity, key moment, and I’ve already had a mince pie, so we are starting earlier this year,” she told the publication.
Kate was presented with her Inspiration award while hosting the One Million Minutes Awards with her GMB co-star Ben Shephard last night.
She said that she didn’t feel like an inspiration as she had “just been getting through”.
The Smooth Radio star was given the accolade for the way she has coped with her husband’s COVID-19 battle, raising her two children and continuing to raise awareness amid the pandemic.
Derek remains in hospital after contracting the virus back in March.

“Of course, we are very proud that Kate has been awarded the Hello! Star Woman of 2020 Inspiration of the Year,” Ben told viewers.
“Now Kate will undoubtedly be very self-deprecating about this, but we all know what she’s been through.”
“I was flabbergasted,” Kate said.
Ben continued: “We all know what she’s been through and how extraordinary she has been, and she will palm it off and say ‘I just had to do it and there are other people doing more amazing things’, but we are extraordinarily, extraordinarily proud of you, Kate and what you’ve managed to do and have a huge amount of admiration, and often look at ourselves and wonder how you’re managing to get through it and do it.”
Kate was presented with the award on a different occasion and a video of the moment was played at the ceremony.
She said: “I was surprised, because like everything it was done virtually so I was absolutely flabbergasted and surprised.
“I thought I was there for something else and it was very sweet.”
In the video Kate said: “I don’t feel like I’m an inspiration at all. I feel like I’ve just been trying to get through. If it has been helpful then that’s lovely.”
