Jason Gardiner, 49, is a former judge on the ITV series of Dancing On Ice and Phillip Schofield, 58, presents the skating show. The TV star has since spoken out about his former co-star addressing his sexuality as Jason admitted he was surprised.
It comes after Phillip came out as gay in February last year on ITV’s This Morning.
Jason has since addressed the This Morning host’s admission, as he urged the presenter to do more for the LGBTQ community.
Speaking in a new interview, the former Dancing On Ice judge explained Phillip is in a good position to bring more awareness to gay rights.
“There were rumours around him being gay but I took them with a pinch of salt,” Jason commented.
“I’d always got on with his wife Steph, she is an ex-dancer. I was shocked as to why he came out and did not announce he was seeing anyone.”
He added: “I don’t hear anything about him being outraged about what is happening to his new community.”
While Jason believes Phillip’s announcement was “brave” he felt “it doesn’t make sense — if you’re not going to actually get on board with the LGBTQ community and advance injustices”.
The ex-Dancing On Ice judge – who was branded Mr Nasty – claimed that Phillip made the announcement to “get it off his chest”.
“He came out of the closet to stay locked down,” Jason continued to The Sun.
“The whole timing of it was off, it didn’t have any rhyme or reason. He wasn’t in love with another man.”
Jason added: “He just wanted to get it off his chest — so it was like, ‘OK, thanks for sharing Phil . . . but why?’”
Last year, the This Morning presenter announced that he was gay in an Instagram post and later shared the news on the ITV daytime programme.

Speaking with his co-star Holly Willoughby, Phillip explained his reasoning for coming out.
He told her he had been inspired by the “brave” guests who have appeared on the show and thought: “I have to be that person.”
He said he had “never had any secrets” from his wife of 27 years, Stephanie Lowe.
Elsewhere, Jason has hit out at the current series of Dancing On Ice.
The ex-panellist, who was famed for his outlandish remarks, called the show “cold”, “flat”, and “predictable” and claimed producers should “never” tried to get it on air this year.
It comes as this year’s series has been blighted with injuries and a Covid case with five contestants having to withdraw from the competition.
ITV was also forced to pause the show for a week, and has recently brought the final forward as a result of the drop-outs.
Speaking about the series, Jason told the same publication that the show has “lost it’s fun element” and the “energy is flat and weird”.
Dancing On Ice airs tonight on ITV at 6.15pm.
