Geddy Lee and Bryan Adams were among dozens of Canadian artists who paid tribute to the late Bill Withers by singing his classic “Lean on Me” during the “Stronger Together, Tous Ensemble” broadcast on Sunday.
The livestreamed television special was organized by AtistsCan to raise money for the Canadian Red Cross’s COVID-19 efforts.
Justin Bieber, Avril Lavigne, Michael Buble, Sarah McLachlan, Buffy Saint-Marie and several other known and unknown Canadian singers participated in the show.
The clip also features cameo appearances from Robb Wells and Mike Smith from “Trailer Park Boys” and Detroit Red Wings GM/Hockey Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman.
Jon Levine produced the show. Dan Kanter scored the music and The Young Astronauts produced the video.
The video for the recording was prefaced with the message: “To the late, great Bill Withers. Thank you for your lyrics and inspiring message. We are grateful to lean on music during our time of need. Your musical legacy lives on through us.”
Withers, aged 81, passed away earlier this month after battling heart issues.
It was Lee’s first public appearance, albeit digitally, since the death of his longtime Rush bandmate, drummer Neil Peart.
