Cody Simpson Places Last in Men’s Butterfly Final, Fails to Qualify for Olympics

The ‘Pretty Brown Eyes’ singer fall short of qualifying for 2021 Summer Omlypics after making it to the men’s 100 metre butterfly final at the Australian swimming trials.

AceShowbizCody Simpson placed last in the men’s 100 metre butterfly final on Thursday (17Jun21), marking the end of his 2021 Summer Olympics journey.

The singer has been taking a break from music to focus on swimming, but his dreams of representing Australia were quashed this week after he failed to place high enough in the country’s national trials.

Following the race, Simpson, who famously dated Miley Cyrus for 10 months until August 2020, vowed to “come back stronger next year” with an eye to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Admitting he didn’t think he’d be “remotely competitive until at least next year at the earliest,” the “Pretty Brown Eyes” hitmaker added, “I feel good. It was my goal to come out and make a final today.”

“It’s what I did. Happy to be here.”

The star now plans to take a break before coming back for the Commonwealth Games trials in 2022, reported Mail Online.

Cody clocked in with a time of 52.94 seconds, only fractionally slower than his personal best earlier that day. Matthew Temple won the final, breaking the Australian record with his time of 50.45 seconds.

The chart-topping singer previously explained why he pursued career as an athlete despite finding fame in music industry, “I love the music industry very much, and I’ll continue to be a musician long into my life, but it’s not as pure of a pursuit as sport, which just comes straight down to the clock.”
